Maple Syrup & Apples

ree

Last night, I was giving a later Reiki session. A home visit in Manhattan on a higher floor in a building I’ve known for years. The sun set as the session progressed and the whole city softened. So very lovely.

And then, just as I was using my Tingsha bells to signal and close the session, a siren, followed by another and another, burst through all of that softness. All of that stillness. My client, smiled dreamily, chuckled and said “it was soooo quiet.” And I said, “until it wasn’t.”

I’ve never thought of myself as a cynical person. But I certainly have the capacity. And I want to be careful of that. Pockets of joy, moments of sweetness. Time to put my hands on my heart and listen to what I am feeling. All so important to keeping present in this moment of time.

I went to Vermont this past weekend and returned with maple syrup and apples. I sweeten cups of roasted dandelion root tea with maple syrup when sweetness is requested by a client and for myself. Just a smidge. So simple. That sweetness. The heat from the tea and the cup that warms your hands and the fragrance of the steam that rises. And dipping apples in maple syrup is a wonderful treat. And looking at the apples, picking the apples, finding the crisp ones and all the bright and vibrant and muted colors of each one.

Our senses keep us grounded, I believe, and help us move through our days and fight the good fight and bring home the bacon (figuratively, but also literally, depending on how you feel about bacon). Our senses help us to love one another and to be kind and respectful. To listen. And to really hear.

Vivaldi. Vivaldi's Four Seasons - Autumn is worth visiting. I like to think the tree outside my window appreciates me cranking up the volume.
